The protest against the move to auction 1,163 acres and 31.5 cents of Munderi forest land has brought leaders of rival political parties under one umbrella.

Former forest minister and CPI leader Benoy Viswom visited the land on Sunday. Muslim League leader Panakkad Munavarali Shihab Thangal also visited the forest land along with party workers.

Munderi Vana Samrakshana Samara Samithi (MVSSS) staged a one-day fast with the cooperation of the Nilambur committee of Sasthra Sahitya Parishath on Sunday. Both Benoy Viswom and Munavarali Shihab Thangal addressed the protesters.

“No government or institution is eligible to hand over Ecologically Fragile Land to private persons. I have visited the land and there is no doubt that it is dense forest. It cannot be handed over to private parties,” Benoy Viswom said. Munavarali Shihab Thangal offered special prayers for the protection of the forest.  Representatives of various political organisations offered support to the protest.

Edakkara Panchayat President O T James inaugurated the fast. Edakkara block panchayat member Iqbal Munderi was present.

Environmental activists Dr Kedar Nath, Dr K R Vasudevan, K K Ramakrishnan, K Arunkumar, P K Sreekumar, K C Muraleedharan and Surendran participated in the protest.

MVSSS will organise a protest march to the forest on August 11.
