THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government on Wednesday decided to sanction Rs 48 crore to the Kochi City Corporation for acquiring land to construct a railway over bridge (ROB) near Cochin Shipyard as part of commencing the Kochi Metro project works.Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, in his postCabinet briefing, said that the ROB would be constructed by the Kochi Corporation under the JNNURM scheme. However, under this scheme, funds cannot be allocated for land acquisition and hence, the State Government has decided to assist the Corporation."When preparatory works begin for the Kochi Metro, it will be the duty of the City Corporation to take necessary precautions to get rid of traffic snarls in the city,' the Chief Minister said.The government will help the City Corporation in the land acquisition process for the project and for the preparatory works, the government has already sanctioned Rs 154 crore. A highlevel meeting convened two days ago decided to speed up the implementation of the project with the support of the Centre. The project is being planned on the lines of Chennai model and will be executed with the support of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Chandy said.Project DirectorGiving a clear message that the UDF Government wanted to speed up things for the Kochi Metro, the Cabinet appointed Tom Jose as the Special Project Director of the Kochi Metro Rail Project.Potable Water ProjectThe Cabinet sanctioned Rs 11 crore for land acquisition to execute the works of the potable water project for Kochi city. "Several projects are delayed owing to lack of funds for land acquisition and hence, the government has decided to provide funds as it would benefit the people of 10 Assembly constituencies in Ernakulam district,' the Chief Minister said.
