KOCHI: In an effort to bring down the rate of accidents in the city, the Motor Vehicles Department has decided to take a slew of measures, including vitalising the activities of the Road Safety Authority in the district. As part of the endeavour, the department, with the help of the public, will identify the accident prone spots in the city.Once an accident prone spot is identified, the department will take proper steps to make the place safe. The public can call the attention of the authorities to these spots. "There are many accident prone spots in the city. After identifying them, we will seek the help of the police and the Public Works Department," Ernakulam RTO Thomas said.The department will seek the help of the PWD to prepare the estimate of the work. "If the cost of the work is less than Rs 50,000, we will allow the amount from the District Road Safety Council. If it is more than Rs 50,000, we will seek aid from the state authority," Thomas said.Various programmes to create awareness on traffic laws and safety measures will be organised as part of the endeavour. Devices like breath analysers will be given to the police to check traffic violations. The money for such projects will be disbursed from the road safety fund.The meeting of the District Road Safety Council, to be held on July 6, will take more decisions on vitalising the activities of the council.The public can submit complaints in this regard to the RTO or the district collector. The RTO in turn will send the complaints to the agencies concerned for rectification.
