New Delhi: India's number one women's tennis player Sania Mirza has been seeded 31 in the first Grand Slam of the year - the Australian Open - beginning on January 14 in Melbourne.
Sania has been seeded according to her position in the WTA ranking charts.
Being seeded would help Sania avoid facing stronger opponents in the opening few rounds.
World number one Belgian Justin Henin has been given the top billing while defending champion American Serena Williams is seeded seventh.
For the men's event, World No. 1 Roger Federer was given top billing, while Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Nikolay Davedenko and David Ferrer completed the top five in that order.
Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova was given the second seed behind Justine Henin in the women's event, while the next two spots were taken by Serbians Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic. Former world number one Maria Sharapova was ranked fifth.
The draw for the year's first Grand Slam will be held on Friday.
