Paris: French President Nicolas Sarkozy is facing the biggest crisis of his presidency. He has been directly linked for the first time to L'Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt's murky finances.
Reports claim that his presidential campaign received 150,000 euros in cash from the country's richest woman. The allegations hit Sarkozy at a crucial time as he struggles with plunging popularity ratings and difficult economic reforms.
If these allegations are confirmed, the party payments would be illegal, surpassing the limit. Sarkozy's office has however denied the allegations.
Denying the charges, Sarkozy said: "I would so much like that our country fascinates itself for the great problems such as health, health organisation, pensions, how to create growth, rather than to get carried away with the first horror, slander, which has only goal to damage without any reality whatsoever."
