New Delhi: Security for Justice Deepak Misra has been beefed after he received an anonymous threat letter. Justice Mishra headed the bench of the judges of the Supreme Court panel which rejected plea of 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon leading to his execution.
Delhi Police has registered a case in the matter and has launched an investigation into the same. The letter states that Justice Misra will be targeted even if his security is increased.
Soon after the three-bench gave the verdict, security of three judges was increased.
Memon was convicted in 2007 for his role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts in which 257 people were killed. Charges of financing the terror attacks that were masterminded by his older brother Tiger and Dawood Ibrahim were levelled against him.
In 2013, the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence. A mercy petition filed by his brother on his behalf was turned down by President Pranab Mukherjee.
He was hanged on July 30 after a night of unprecedented legal action. In the days leading up to teh day of execution, several pleas of relief to him were filed and rejected.
His lawyers and activists had claimed that since he had cooperated with investigators, he did not deserve a death penalty.
