BANGALORE: After Bannerghatta and Ramanagaram forest area, the Biodiversity Conservation India Ltd (BCIL) will now be identifying about ten different forest and vacant lands in and around Bangalore for spreading its 'seed ball' (variety of different seeds rolled within a ball of clay) project to increase afforestation and green cover.
"Sunkadakatte, Magadi Road, Dodballapur and vacant lands around Sarjapur are among the major areas identified for the project. A few months back, with the help of 20 employees from Infosys, we had spread the seed balls around Bannerghatta and Ramanagaram forest area and we have succeeded in getting 65 percent success rate.

The remaining were eaten up by birds and few failed to germinate" said Chandrashekar Hariharan, Chairman, Biodiversity Conservation India Ltd.

He said, "We had distributed about one million seed balls with the help of several organisations and schools across the city. As a follow up measure our team goes out to check once in a month."

About the seed balls preparation Dr Harish, AGM, BCIL said, "The seed balls can be used in any region where plants can grow. It is an ancient technique which was redeveloped by a Japanese microbiologist and soil scientist. We have identified 25 species of seeds that are pertinent for the local climate. Once the seed ball is made, it is dried in shade for 24 hours . These dried seed balls are then deployed on any open surface."
