Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, a close aide of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, has claimed responsibility for Sidhu Moosewala’s murder
A day after the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government withdrew two security men from his security cover, popular Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala was shot dead at Jahawarke village of Mansa district on Sunday. Two others were also injured in the firing incident.
The shocking murder of the pop star is likely to take a political turn just months into the tenure of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Here’s a look at major developments around the incident:
- Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, a close aide of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, has claimed responsibility for Sidhu Moosewala’s murder
- Moosewala had four police gunmen on his security, out of which two were withdrawn by the government on Saturday
- Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu Moose Wala, aka Sidhu Moosewala, had contested the Punjab Assembly elections on a Congress ticket from Mansa constituency and had lost his debut poll to AAP’s now sacked cabinet minister Vijay Singla, who has been arrested on corruption charges
- Though the police have not divulged any details, sources said they are suspecting a gangster’s role in the attack on Moosewala. Recently, gangsters mainly settled in Canada had made ransom calls to many singers and Punjabi actors
- Sources said Moosewala would usually move around in his bullet proof Fortuner, but on Sunday, he was driven in his other luxury car Thar which was not bullet-proof
- Police officials say eight assailants attacked Moosewala and bullets from three AK-94 rifles, rare in use in Punjab, have been found
- Reacting to Sidhu Moosewala’s murder, CM Bhagwant Mann tweeted: “I am Shocked and Deeply saddened by the gruesome murder of Siddhu Moosewala. Nobody involved will be spared. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and his fans across the world. I appeal everyone to stay calm”
- The Congress, which was ousted from power in Punjab this March, has demanded the resignation of AAP CM Bhagwant Mann. “Murder of a promising youngster Sidhu Moosewala exposes law & order situation of Punjab. CM @BhagwantMann should immediately resign as he holds charge of home department and an explanation is needed on what basis his security was withdrawn yesterday just one day before attack,” Partap Singh Bajwa tweeted
- Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, too, mourned Moosewala’s death. “Deeply shocked and saddened by the murder of promising Congress leader and talented artist, Sidhu Moosewala. My heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and fans from across the world,” the Congress leader tweeted
- Moosewala hailed from Moosa village in Mansa district and his mother is a village head and father an ex-serviceman. Extremely popular among the youth with 6.9 million followers on Instagram and nearly 1 crore subscribers on his YouTube channel, Moosewala’s celebrity came with criticism of promoting drugs and violence in his songs
