JHARSUGUDA: A signature campaign seeking removal of the coal washery of Earth Minerals Corporation Ltd (EMCL) has been kicked off by the locals. They are protesting air pollution created by the Bandhbahal-based coal washery. They resorted to this step after the authorities concerned were briefed about it several times but in vain. Leading the campaign, Malati Singh (44) said they would not settle for anything less than shifting of the coal unit. Their attempts to draw attention of Jharsuguda administration and Odisha State Pollution Control Board failed. The EMCL procures coal from Belpahar and Lakhanpur mines of the MCL with daily use of around 100 tippers. During transportation, the coal dust flies all over the periphery areas. The coal washery works to the monthly capacity of processing around 90,000 tonnes, they said. With the residential colony of MCL located only about 50 metres away, its residents bear the maximum brunt. EMCL Director NK Sharma admitted to air pollution and said all-out efforts would be made to minimise the levels of pollution. OSPCB Regional Officer MS Majhi said action would be taken after an inquiry.
