Kolkata: Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani has challenged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to explain her stand on triple talaq if she really believes in equality and justice.
Addressing a press conference, Irani said, “I am interacting with you in a state which is governed by a female chief minister. When we talk about equality and justice, I would love to hear what Mamata Didi feels about triple talaq.”
Interestingly, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on April 13 slammed Mamata Banerjee over her silence on the issue. “Why is she quite on triple talaq,” he had said.
BJP insiders told News18 that the central leadership is now trying to corner Mamata Banerjee over triple talaq. “Whether she supports or opposes it, in both cases it will go against her. If she supports triple talaq, majority of Muslim women will go against her. And if she opposes it, then majority of Muslim men will speak against her,” a BJP leader said on request of anonymity.
Smriti Irani, who was in Kolkata to attend a party workers’ meeting, refused to comment further on this issue.
However, she was quick to slam Mamata for blaming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe against senior Trinamool Congress leaders in the Narada sting case. “All I want to say is Ulta Chor Kotowal Ko Datey (the guilty accusing the innocent),” Irani said.
When asked about Supreme Court’s ruling against LK Advani and other top BJP leaders in Babri Masjid demolition case, she said, “I will not like to make any comment on this. The party will decide.”
On rumours around a secret political understanding with TMC, Irani said, “Had it been the case, why are BJP workers beaten mercilessly here. There are people who are spreading such rumours. They have actually faded away and want to clutch on to the headlines with such conspiracy theories.”
