New Delhi: Just a week ago Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed his inability to reduce oil prices. Congress President Sonia Gandhi spoke to him on Tuesday and the Government on Wednesday slashed oil prices.
It's Sonia power that fuels the government. She told Singh that the oil prices were harassing the common man. A hurried meeting between Petroleum Minister Murli Deora and Singh was arranged and on Wednesday Parliament was informed that the prices of diesel and petrol are being slashed: by Rs 2 per litre and Re 1 per litre respectively.
The scramble for giving Sonia credit for the price cut has begun. “Whoever is interested in politics, in public affairs is well aware how, when and in what manner this decrease was brought about", said Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi.
“We wanted it, we made a demand and Sonia listened to us,” said CPI(M) MP Sitaram Yechuri.
The Opposition, of course, isn’t impressed. “The Congress party is trying to pat itself in the back, but it's not a pat that it deserves because the decrease in prices is totally disproportionate to the decrease in prices in the international market,” said BJP MP Arun Jaitley.
The price cut is good politics, as it comes just a few months before assembly elections next year and makes the common man happy.
