THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has suspended Dr Unmesh, the forensic surgeon of the Thrissur Medical College, who gave statements to weaken the prosecution case in the sensational rape and murder of Soumya.Health Minister Adoor Prakash told mediapersons here on Monday that the disciplinary action pending an inquiry has been initiated since the actions of the doctor were found to be against medical ethics .“It is quite unfortunate that the doctor acted in this manner. The government wanted to initiate action much earlier, but waited since the court itself had intervened and ordered criminal proceedings against him,” the minister said. Though the government had taken steps for departmental action, it was put on hold since the relevant records were handed over to the court. Based on the report of the inquiry ordered now, the scope of dismissing the doctor from service will be taken up, if necessary. The fast track trial court, which had convicted the main accused Govindachami to death by hanging, had expressed serious concern on the shift in stance of Dr Unmesh, who had wrongly stated that the autopsy on Soumya was conducted by him. He had submitted before the court that the postmortem was not conducted by Dr Sherly Vasu, when the truth was otherwise.
