Lucknow: A POCSO court in Lucknow on Tuesday granted bail to rape accused Samajwadi Party leader Gayatri Prajapati and two others—Pintu Singh and Vikas Verma.
On Monday, the Supreme Court had accepted the victim’s appeal seeking police protection and directed UP police to provide protection to her family members.
Prajapati was arrested from Lucknow on March 15 after the Supreme Court’s directives and was sent to judicial custody. The SP leader had sought a Narco test soon after his arrest and denied the charges against him, calling them politically motivated.
An FIR was lodged on February 17 against the 49-year-old minister and six others for allegedly gang-raping a woman and attempting to rape her minor daughter.
The woman had said in her complaint that she was gang-raped from October 2014 to July 2016. When the accused tried to molest her daughter, she wrote a letter in October 2016 to the DGP demanding action.
A Look Out notice and a non-bailable warrant were issued against Prajapati, while his passport was also impounded. Airports across the country were alerted about the possibility of Prajapati trying to flee the country.
In 2016, Prajapati had been sacked by then chief minister Akhilesh Yadav during the Samajwadi Party family feud but was later reinstated in the council of ministers.
