HASSAN: Blaming the ignorance of the civil society for the increase of corruption in all sectors, former Lokayukta justice N Santosh Hegde on Monday said corruption can’t be checked unless people start questioning the elected representatives. He was speaking after inaugurating the Anti-corruption Day organised by Karnataka Rajya Raita Sangha (KRRS) and Hasiru Sene in memory of late progressive farmers Hakkigudu Hanume Gowda and V Nanjegowda at Ambedkar Bhavan in the city. He said society should take a firm decision to fight against corruption which has become rampant in all the sectors. It is the need of the hour to support those who have dedicated themselves to combat corruption,he stressed.Urging the people to think about the impacts of corruption, Hegde said people should fight against corruption keeping in mind the generations to come and live in the society. It is unfortunate that money has become a medium to discriminate against people while the charges of corruption against rich are ignored, he rued and advised the people, “Stop respecting the corrupt officials and elected representatives.”He said people should stop the practice of inviting corrupt elected representatives for programmes just because they donated funds. Honouring the corrupt is the biggest defect in our fight against corruption, he opined.Stressing that no government office was free from corruption and that the menace was not a new factor in the country, Santosh Hegde called upon the people to start rallies against the evil practice.
