Over 16 villages in Mahadevpur mandal, on the borders of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, remained cut off on Sunday with river Godavari and local streams being in spate.
Following heavy rains in the catchment areas, the streams began overflowing with flood water since Saturday night. There is no road communication to these villages, situated 120-160 km away from the district headquarters.
This is the second time in monsoon this year that the villages remained cut off. The Peddampet, Damur and other local streams near the villages came in spate due to backwaters of river Godavari, a month ago.
There are no medical facilities and proper power supply to the villages. Many of the villagers are suffering from viral fevers and seasonal diseases.
According to reports, Somori Rakesh (30) died of viral fever at Pankena village on Saturday night.
The rainwater is contaminating drinking water which is leading to various illnesses. People in some villages near the Mahadevpur mandal headquarters, having mobile connectivity, are calling up their relatives in other places and informing them about their woes. Though causing trouble on one side, the overflowing streams are doing good on the other.
The floodwaters, according to sources, have put a check on the Maoist movement.
