A tailor was beaten to death in a clash between two communities over conducting a prayer service at Saathangcode near Kaliakkavilai on Sunday. The adjoining areas continued to be tense on Monday
On Sunday evening, a prayer service was being conducted in one Gnanamuthan’s house at Saathangcode near Kaliakkavilai. Police said a Hindu group objected to the service and an argument broke out. On information, police rushed to the spot, pacified the groups and dispersed them.
Meanwhile, a rumour that Christians, who went to conduct prayers, were chased away by Hindus spread fast. Subsequently, the two groups, armed with lethal weapons, clashed at Nadaikaavu junction near Saathangcode. Edwin Raj (33), a tailor from Thaanimoottuvilai near Kiraathoor, sustained severe injuries and died on the way to a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.
Following the death, a tension gripped parts of Nadaikaavu and a huge posse of policemen was deployed.
On Monday, Kollemcode police registered a case against District BJP president Dharmaraj and six others for rioting with deadly weapons, murder and attempt to murder. Shops at Nadaikaavu junction downed shutters on Monday and bus services were suspended.
DIG V Varadharaju (Tirunelveli Range) and District SP Pravesh Kumar visited the scene. Hundreds of police personnel from Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi were posted in the area.
On Monday afternoon, Edwin Raj’s body was handed over to his relatives after post mortem. They placed the body on the road and staged a blockade demanding the arrest of the assailants. The protest did not come to an end till late evening as talks between the agitators and the officials was inconclusive.
