CHENNAI: The real heroes of Tamil Nadu will be recognised in an awards function to be held in the Chennai Convention Centre at Nandambakkam on April 6. New Generation Media Corporation’s TV venture, Puthiya Thalaimurai (PT), will honour and felicitate those who have brought glory to the state and have made TN visible on the global map. The Tamilian of the Year awards will appreciate those of Tamil origin who have excelled in the fields of social service, literature, science, business, sports and entertainment.A total of 12 trophies and citations in six categories will be presented at a glittering ceremony to be held on Friday. Describing the process of selection, Shyam, director - operations, said that people from all the districts of TN had been asked to nominate someone they felt was deserving of the award.Specially designed vehicles were sent across the state to collect nominations and votes. The public also voted through SMS, e-mail, on the website and through post. Shyam says, “We received 6,400 names as suggestions, from a total of 2.75 lakh votes in 20 days. After validation, ten were shortlisted. An eminent panel of judges, along with the editorial board of PT, decided the recipients.”Srinivasan, director - news, said, “No matter where the road show went there was enthusiastic participation. The award, in some sense, reflects the desire of the people.”Those nominated should have Tamil as their mother tongue, and at least one parent of Tamil origin. They themselves should have a connection to the language, said Maalan, editor of PT Magazine. “So many names have come up which we have not heard of before. Through these awards, we want to sustain excellence,” he added.
