Thane: College professor kills wife, daughter

Thane: A college professor allegedly killed his wife and nine-year-old daughter and later attempted suicide in Thane on Monday night, police said.

Sanjay Umbarkar (42) attacked his wife Swati (40), also a professor, and daughter Atharva with a knife in their flat in Dhokali area following heated argument with the latter over some petty issue. Both died on the spot, they said.

Umbarkar then inflicted stab wounds on his body in an attempt to commit suicide. He was rushed to nearby Jupiter Hospital, where he is battling for life, police said.

Umbarkar teaches at Annasaeb Jadhav College in Bhiwandi while his wife was a professor at BNN College, also in Bhiwandi.

The couple's son Rigved (15), who was pushed out of the house by his father during the quarrel, narrated the incident to the police.

The couple had frequent quarrels over petty issues and Monday's incident was a result of the same, police said.

The blood stained knife has been recovered from the house and further investigation was on, they added.
