The day began early for the Express team on Saturday. What it saw first was an ambulance of the Ernakulam General Hospital which had rammed into an electric pole a few kilometres ahead of the site where the landslide had taken place.
The ambulance was on its way to Kadavoor fourth block for rescue operations when it met with the accident on Friday afternoon. At Kadavoor the rain was slowly giving way to a clear sky. The Fire and Rescue Services personnel had begun their operations by daybreak. The earth movers had started removing debris in search of the missing bodies. The Navy men were also taking part in the rescue operations.
In the rubble was the dead body of a pet dog still chained to its wooden pole. As more locals, relatives and representatives from the local bodies arrived at the site, the work gained momentum with many giving a helping hand to the rescue agencies with sticks and spades.
After hours of work, around 9.45 am, a body was vaguely spotted in the rubble. It was shifted to an ambulance.
Though the rescue operations continued with renewed vigour with one more earth mover being brought to the site, the body of Kaduvakkuzhiyil Nalini, who went missing on Friday, could not be recovered.
