VELLORE: The State Budget presented by Finance Minister O Panneerselvam at the State Assembly on Monday has received a mixed response from traders, consumers and the general public here. While there is a sigh of relief that no new tax has been imposed, a cross section of the traders felt that more concessions were needed. The tax waiver on insulin has been sweet news for diabetics. The Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu has described the Tamil Nadu Budget as a ‘lightweight’ one but that has not burdened the traders or the general public. The Regional President of the Peramaippu Ambur C Krishnan said that it was a big relief that the budget had not imposed any new tax. “The reduction of tax on items like wheat and Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) would help the consumers in a big way,” he added. Krishnan hoped that some of the suggestions placed before the State Government by the Peramaippu, on extending the limit of the compounding tax payable by the traders to `Five lakh and the exemption of tax for small traders whose turnover was up to `30 lakh from the present ceiling of `10 lakh would be favourably considered by the government during the budget session. While welcoming the reduction of VAT on CFL, traders selling electrical goods pointed out that the move would help the consumers migrate to the cost-effective lamps, which would in turn reduce electricity consumption. Some persons with diabetes, however, hoped that drug manufacturers should not hike the basic price of medicines.
