KOCHI: The members of the Military Engineer Services contractors observed a token strike on Monday in protest against the Controller of Defence Accounts’ order to recover heavy compensation on completed works within the extended period give by the MES Department.As per the conditions of the contract, the competent engineering authorities extend time to finish the work on acceptable reasons to the Department. Also while granting extension, it clearly states that the financial effect of this deviation order is nil. However, unlike in the past, the Controller of Defence Accounts, Chennai, started levying compensation on extensions already granted. Across the country, only CDA Chennai has imposed this unlawful arbitrary recovery under their jurisdiction. As a result, so many bills amounting to crores of rupees are pending for payment in the last two months, a statement issued by the MES Builders Association said.
