Top seed Saina Nehwal opens Swiss Open as favourite
The world No. 3 starts her campaign against France's Sashina Vignes Waran in Basel on Thursday.

Basel, Switzerland: India's Olympic medal-winning shuttler Saina Nehwal will open her campaign at the 2013 Swiss Open here on Thursday as one of the favourites for the women's singles competition.

Saina, ranked No. 3 and the top seed at the Basel event, will first play Sashina Vignes Waran of France and is expected to have a smooth sail until the quarter-finals, where she is likely to meet sixth seed Tzu Ying Tai of Chinese Taipei.

Saina missed out on winning the recent All England Championship but will now look to clinch the USD 125,000 Swiss Open crown to complete a hat-trick at the event. The 22-year-old from Hyderabad defeated 2010 Asian Games gold medallist Shixian Wang in the quarter-finals of the All England Championship after a tight and gruelling three-game battle. Wang and Thailand's Intanon Ratchanok, who spoilt Saina's All England dream, will be in the second half of the Swiss Open.

Saina could come up against Wang for a place in the final.
