CHENNAI: Sleuths of the Anti-Vice Squad (AVS) arrested an assistant director of television serials and two brokers and rescued four young women in separate incidents in the city.Acting on information that junior film and TV artists were being lured into the prostitution racket, a special squad led by Inspector Santiago called a particular cell number and made enquiries posing as ‘customers’. After being told to come to a spot in Vadapalani with the money, the cops went there incognito and trapped a man. It came to light that he was Anbu of Porur, who worked as assistant director of two TV serials and as a choreographer for stage dances.The AVS team rescued a young woman from his clutches.In another incident an AVS team arrested Loganathan, who was carrying on a prostitution racket in his house on Thirunavukkarasu Street in Perambur, and rescued two women. Inquiry showed that he was a notorious pimp in north Chennai. In the third incident a woman from Delhi was rescued by the squad after the arrest of Arun, a native of Tiruchi, near the Velachery bus stand. All three accused men were produced before a court, which remanded them to judicial custody. The four women were sent to a government shelter for women in Mylapore.Councillor attackedUnidentified men attacked and injured a DMK councillor of the Poonamallee municipality on Thursday.Sekhar, a resident of Vanibhar Street in Karainchavadi, was the councillor of Ward 8 of the Poonamalle municipality. He had been elected to the civic body thrice consecutively. On Thursday, around 8 am, he left his house by two-wheeler to the municipal office, when he was intercepted by two armed men on a bike.The duo attacked him with steel rods and Sekhar lost his balance and fell down unconscious. Locals chased the fleeing assailants in vain, the sources said. The councillor was admitted in a private hospital in the area. Registering a case, the Poonamallee police have launched a manhunt for the assailants.Woman techie commits suicideA 26-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging, allegedly after a tiff with her husband at Pallikaranai on Wednesday.Sources said there was a verbal altercation between Vijayakumar (30) and his wife Devika after the two returned from a hospital on Wednesday morning. The couple lived on Indarjit Street in Kovilambakkam, near Velachery and both were engineers.Vijayakumar left for his work place and, when he returned at night, got no response to repeated knocking on the front door.He peeped through the window and saw his wife’s body hanging from the fan.Pallikaranai police recovered the body and sent it to the Chromepet government hospital for post mortem. An RDO inquiry has been ordered as the couple got married just a year ago.
