Kochi: A 52-year-old man fell from the second floor of a building but the people around him did nothing to help. The CCTV footage showed how people remained indifferent and mute spectators while the man squirmed in agony.
It was only after 15 minutes had passed that Ranjini Ramanandan, who was passing by, came to Saji’s rescue.
Saji, a native of Thrissur, was staying at a lodge when he accidentally fell and landed on the busy street.
Ramanandan, an advocate, upon seeing the man’s condition approached people for help. It was only after she took charge and asked people to come forward and help her to get Saji to the hospital that people were able to shake off their reluctance and joined in to help the man.
At first an auto was stopped, but the driver refused to take the bloodied man in his auto. Ramanandan was then seen stopping a car in order to take Saji to the hospital.
Saji is now admitted to Kottayam medical college and undergoing treatment.
Taking note of the incident, the offcial handle of Chief Minister's office tweeted: "CM Pinarayi Vijayan said that the news from Kochi about bystanders failing to help a man who fell from a multistoried building is shocking. The fact that a person was left bleeding on a busy road for 15 minutes demands a serious introspection on the part of the Keralites."
The CMO also said in a tweet that government will soon come up with a scheme that will provide free emergency care in the first 48 hours after an accident.
The tweet "urged all Keralities to renounce torpor and demonstrate the better humanity in us during such situations".
The government assured that there is legal protection for those who provide emergency aid to accident victims.
