An undertrial prisoner attacked a civil police officer who was accompanying him to the District Court here on Thursday.
Suresh alias Vava Suresh who attacked the policeman is an accused in several criminal cases, including the murder of gangster Kannadi Shaji.
The Civil Police Officer Kishore, attached to City Armed Reserve Camp, who was seriously injured in the attack, was later taken to the General Hospital. The prisoner is said to have become irked after the policeman rejected his attempts to make a call from the mobile phone of his friend who was present on the court premises. The cop also blocked his friend’s attempts to hand him beedi and ganja.
Eyewitnesses said the prisoner jumped and kicked on Kishore’s chest.
When the latter lost his balance, Suresh continued the attack by delivering a blow behind Kishore’s ear using the metal shackle of his handcuff.
It may be recalled that the District Judge had earlier asked the police to beef up security on the court premises when notorious criminals are being brought to court premises.
