Under the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government, Uttar Pradesh has recorded a steep rise in the number of rape cases in 2013 as compared to the previous year.

Per data tabled in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju, while answering a question by Ramdas Athawale, as many as 3,050 cases of rape were reported in Uttar Pradesh in 2013 as against 1,963 in 2012, an increase of above 55 per cent. In 2011, the number stood at 2,042.

In March 2012, Samajwadi Party had registered a landslide victory and Yadav became Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous and politically crucial state.

According to the data, out of the 3,050 rape cases of 2013, charge-sheet had been filed in 2,302 cases and 5,587 persons arrested.

In 2012, a total of 3,593 persons had been arrested in connection with the 1,963 rape cases while charge-sheet were filed in 1,513 cases. In 2011, 3,571 persons were arrested in the 2,042 such cases and 1,580 charge-sheets filed.

Per the National Crime Records Bureau data, Uttar Pradesh, accounting for nearly 16.7 per cent of the country's women population, recorded 10.5 per cent of total cases of crimes against women in the country by reporting 32,546 incidents in 2013.

The state government has been facing flak after a series of rape cases, including the one that took place in Badaun, hit the headlines in the past couple of months.
