Malappuram: In an apparent case of honour killing, a man allegedly stabbed to death his 21-year old daughter, a day before she was to marry her lover, a Dalit.
Police have arrested 42-year-old Rajan, a driver by profession and a resident of Poovathikkandiyil in Kizhuparamb near Areekode for killing his daughter, Athira, at their neighbour's house on Thursday evening.
"Rajan had asked his daughter several times to retract from the relationship . However, she stood firm. The preliminary investigation revealed that the murder was not pre-planned and was done in a fit of rage,” Sinod, Sun Inspector Areekod said.
Athira was in a relation with Brajesh, an army man who belonged to a scheduled caste community from Koyilandi in the neighbouring district Kozhikode.
Rajan, an Ezhava, who vehemently opposed the relationship, later conceded her wish following a meeting at the Areekod police station. The couple was set to marry at Saligramam Temple in a simple ceremony on Friday.
"Athira's father was not too happy with our union. However, he gave his consent because of police intervention, but frequent quarrels continued over our relationship, " Brajesh told media.
On Thursday afternoon, the father and the daughter apparently entered into an argument over the marriage, said the police. Then, Athira left home and took shelter at a neighbour’s house. However, Rajan who followed his daughter, in an inebriated condition, dragged and stabbed her.
She was rushed to a private medical college at Mukkam, where the doctors declared her 'dead on arrival'.
