New Delhi: US has reiterated that it is with India on terror but perhaps the hard bargain that US the hard bargain that US secretary of state Hillary Clinton wants is to drive India on climate change.
Is Clinton pushing India into accepting the west's emission norms that India has resisted so far, ask many.
The US Secretary of State had a high level meeting with Minister of State for Environment and Forests, Jairam Ramesh.
Clinton is on a big mission to get the two countries to work together for reducing carbon emissions.
“Now US and India can amplify the problem to device a comprehensive strategic approach to climate change and to clean energy future. That's an important topic of my trip,” Clinton said.
Historically India and the US have always disagreed on issues of climate change. While the US wants India to do much more to reduce its carbon emissions, India has so far refused saying it will hamper economic development. India has in fact argued that:
- Per capita emissions of a US citizen is 20 tonnes/ year
- that of an average Indian is only 1 tonne
Jairam Ramesh said, “India's position is clear. We are simply not in a mission to take on legally-binding targets.”
The two countries for the moment have set their differences aside and the talks on Sunday focused on issues of cooperation in areas such as renewable and clean technology.
