BANGALORE: The University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) has failed to remunerate close to 30 guest faculties in the Department of Computer Science Engineering (CSE)for the last one year. The New Indian Express has managed to procure a copy of a letter written by Principal of UVCE Dr K R Venugopal addressed to the Registrar, Bangalore University (BU), in which he has mentioned that remuneration and appointment of guest faculty has not been done for the last one year. “There are fifteen members in the Department of CSE. We rope in experts from other colleges as guest faculty as there is an enormous workload,” said a staff member from UVCE on condition of anonymity. “It is not just this department, guest faculty from other departments have also not been remunerated of late,” said the staff member. According to remuneration guidelines, a guest faculty at UVCE is paid `1,000 per hour. “We request our colleagues to teach here and it is embarrassing if they are not remunerated. I have lost account on how much they have to be paid,” he added. The New Indian Express also spoke to a guest faculty at UVCE, who is due to be paid for the last two semesters. “BU has guidelines regarding payment of guest faculty. We have to file attendance every time we come and this data goes to BU. We are stipulated to take classes according to the syllabus, which means 3-4 hours a week,” said the guest faculty. In-Charge Registrar Prof N Rangaswamy alleged that the delay in payment is due to unauthorized appointment of the guest faculties. “I think this is because UVCE has appointed them without proper notification. I do not have a clear idea about how much is due. As a public institution, we are bound by guidelines and I have to look at the appropriate files before taking any decision,” he added.
