Chief Secretary K Jayakumar has bagged the first Vayala Vasudevan Pillai award for his contribution to literature. Announcing the award, writer George Onakkur said that the award would be presented on September 15 at Vayala in Kollam district.
The award instituted by the Vayala Vasudevan Pillai Foundation carries a cash prize of Rs 50,001, a citation and a plaque. Cultural Affairs Minister K C Joseph will present the award at a function to be organised at the Vayala NVUP school. MPs Peethambara Kurup and K N Balagopal, District Panchayat president R Gopalakrishna Pillai and Perumbadavom Sreedharan will attend the function.
Onakkur said that it was heartening that the Foundation had decided to organise the function to present the first award at the writer’s village. Jayakumar has been selected for the award by a Judging Committee comprising George Onakkur, Mullakara Ratnakaran MLA, Muraleedharan Thazhakara and Shyam T Mathew.
Vayala, a great theatre personality, had served as director of the Thrissur School of Drama and the head of the Centre for Performing Arts, University of Kerala.
