VB Cherian absent at CITU office inaugural function

The inauguration of the Cochin Shipyard Workers Union (CITU) office at Thevara, was expected to bear witness to a rare coming together, to be keenly watched by the political observers in the state.

Opposition Leader and senior CPM leader V S Achuthanandan was to share the dias with ousted leader V B Cheriyan at the inaugural function. However, Cheriyan’s failure to turn up at the event  rendered the wait a futile exercise.

As per the earlier declared programme, Shipyard Workers’ Union president V B Cheriyan, Shipyard Employees Association general secretary Thampan Thomas and Shipyard Employees Organisation president Antony Isaac were to attend the function were Achuthanandan was the chief guest. Though most CITU leaders,  including K N Raveendranath and K Chandran Pillai were present, the leaders of other organisations stayed away.

The possibility of VS sharing the dias with Cheriyan has gained significance against the backdrop of media reports that the CPM is planning to reinstate the ousted leaders, including Cheriyan.

A former CITU leader, who was ousted for anti-party activities, Cheriyan has been active in addressing the issues of the workers at the Cochin Shipyard.
