Celebrating Women's Day, PM Modi highlights success stories of women empowered by government schemes like PM-AWAS Yojana and PM SVANidhi

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday shared several success stories of women whose lives were transformed due to game-changing initiatives undertaken by the government.

Celebrating ‘Nari Shakti’ on Women’s Day, PM highlighted tales of rural women whose lives were changed by Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, PM SVANidhi, and Lakhpati Didi Scheme. “A home is the foundation of dignity. It’s where empowerment begins and dreams take flight. PM-AWAS Yojana has been a game-changer to further empowerment of women,” he said in a post on X.

PMAY-U

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U), a flagship Mission of the Government of India being implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), was launched on June 25, 2015. The mission addresses the urban housing shortage among the EWS/LIG and MIG categories including the slum dwellers by ensuring a pucca house for all eligible urban households. “During rainy days and thunderstorms, water used to seep through our roofs. A solid house was more than a dream. I used to pray to God for a pucca home,” said UP resident Urmila Devi in a video posted by PM Modi.

The Prime Minister stressed that women-centric schemes, such as PM SVANidhi, have brought new happiness to the lives of the poorest. PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) seeks to empower Street Vendors by not only extending loans to them but also for their holistic development and economic upliftment.  PM Modi noted the critical role of women in “Viksit Bharat” through schemes like the Lakhpati Didi Scheme, which empowers women across the nation, particularly those connected with Self Help Groups.

‘Gas cylinder prices’

Earlier today, Modi announced a reduction of Rs 100 in cooking gas cylinder prices on International Women’s Day. This will significantly ease the financial burden on millions of households across the country, especially benefiting ‘nari shakti’ (women power), he said in a post on X. “…Gas is more affordable, we also aim to support the well-being of families and ensure a healthier environment. This is in line with our commitment to empowering women and ensuring ‘Ease of Living’ for them,” he said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday expressed “gratitude” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for announcing a reduction of Rs 100 in cooking gas cylinder prices. In a post on X in Hindi, Adityanath said, “The decision of reduction of Rs 100 in the prices of LPG cylinder on the occasion of ‘Women’s Day’ will provide financial relief to crores of families and will also provide a healthy and happy life to the ‘maatrishakti’ (mother power) by freeing them from smoke and pollution.
