NUAPADA/BALANGIR: Stray activities of Maoists were reported from the district, besides Balangir, adjoining the Chhattisgarh region, on Tuesday night. The 24-hour bandh call was given by the Jharkhand Regional Committee of CPI (Maoist) to protest the encounter killing of Kishenji. Trees were felled at two places on NH-353 connecting Raipur and Gopalpur _ near Tarbod and Latabanji forest near Pendraban under Komna police limits, 30 km and 55 km respectively from here. In Balangir, the Maoists blocked road with trees on Tureikela-Mahakhand, 22 km from Kantabanji, with posters and banners hanging on them to register their protest.Besides taking a dig at the Centre and the West Bengal Government for attempting to stamp out the movement, the banners demanded a probe into the killing of Kishenji by a Supreme Court judge.With the killing of Nuapada block chairman Sunil Kumar Dewangan still fresh in the minds of the people, terrified villagers of Bisibahal, Michapali, Jagrahi and Darlipali gram panchayats under Komna block and Dharambandha, Bharuamunda, Chilabhat, Motanuapada, Kendubahara, Aamanara gram panchayats under Nuapada block shut down schools and the market for the day. Nuapada SDPO Prafulla Patra said the trees were felled on Tuesday night. Four teams were deployed and the highway cleared early on Wednesday morning, he added. However, there was no report of any untoward incident from Khaprakhol block in Balangir district where Maoists are active and have resorted to mindless violence in the past. Patnagarh SDPO Laxmi Narayan Panda said the Maoists were on the run and no poster was found here.
