Senior IPS officer Manoj Kumar Verma on Tuesday was appointed the new Commissioner of Kolkata Police by the West Bengal government, replacing Vineet Kumar Goyal.
Verma takes over the position from Goyal, who has been reassigned as Additional Director General (ADG) of the Special Task Force (STF).
Goyal’s removal follows intense scrutiny over his handling of the rape and murder case involving a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. He has been accused of mismanaging the situation, which reportedly led to a mob storming the hospital, allegedly for tampering with the evidence of crime.
Goyal has now been appointed Additional Director General (ADG) and Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the West Bengal Police’s Special Task Force (STF).
The leadership changes come just a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the removal of senior police and health officials in response to the demands of protesting doctors and to end the ongoing impasse.
Who is Manoj Kumar Verma?
Originally from Rajasthan, Manoj Kumar Verma is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 1998 batch.
Prior to this appointment, Verma served as the Additional Director General (ADG) and Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Law & Order. He has now been succeeded by Jawed Shamim, an IPS officer from the 1995 batch, who has taken on the role of ADG and IGP (Law & Order).
An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur, Verma has also held significant positions, including Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Darjeeling and Superintendent of Police (SP) in West Midnapore.
