BANGALORE: After a million promises, the problem of dumping garbage is still a burning issue in the city of Bangalore. As trash keeps piling up at every nook and corner, one may only dare to ask, is it ever going to end? Koramangala 8th Block seems to be the latest victim of filth and debris.City Express takes a walk through the bustling narrow lane to find out more. With a variety of vegetable vendors, fishermen and poultry and meat shops over crowding the street; it comes as no surprise that the seemingly unhygienic condition prevalent here make it unsafe for both residents and shopkeepers. “I live in Koramangala 8th block and commute to office via Shiva Theatre everyday and use this road. And, to be honest, I am still waiting for the day when I don’t have to brace myself for the unbearable stench. All the garbage from the area is dumped here on either sides of the road. This could lead to several health hazards. I am surprised that none of the officials have taken any initiative to sort this issue out. Also, people need to become more responsible. Most of the shop keepers and residents have made this stretch their favourite dumping spot. I think it is about time we collectively come up with a solution, “ said Ishika Sharma, a distraught resident. While the heated debate on responsibilities and initiatives still continues; the garbage collectors are worse affected. Hands deep in grime and muck, they not only operate in despicable conditions but also bear the brunt of insensitivity. “It is ridiculous that none of the officials have stepped forward to put an end to this menace. People dump trash wherever they please. Earlier, there used to be a couple of bins provided by the BBMP for the entire area. But, they were stolen by miscreants. And, since then the officials have not bothered to provide new bins. We use our bare hands to scoop up the trash and transfer them into the vans,” said Sudhakar, one of the garbage collectors. On being questioned about the missing bins and garbage issue, S N Murugesh Modaliyaar, corporator said, ‘‘This is definitely a concern.I will contact the Bruhat Bangalore Mahangara Palike (BBMP) officials and see to it that the missing bins issue is resolved as soon as possible. As, for the dumping of garbage, we are trying our level best to keep that in check.” Are we going to find a permanent solution waste management? Only time will tell. In the never ending battle against pesky litter and junk; let’s hope someday we emerge victorious.
