'Worse Than a Fish Market': Fishermen Community Urges SC Judge to Withdraw His Comment
The National Fisherfolk Forum (NFF) has urged Supreme Court judge DY Chandrachud to withdraw his comment wherein the judge compared a high-decibel arguments in the Court to a "fish market".

New Delhi: The National Fisherfolk Forum (NFF) has urged Supreme Court judge DY Chandrachud to withdraw his comment wherein the judge compared a high-decibel arguments in the Court to a "fish market".

According to the organisation, Justice Chandrachud's remark has disrespected the fishermen community, which had nothing to do with the case being argued.

During a hearing on Monday in Judge Loya's death case, as senior advocates Dushyant Dave and Pallav Shishodia engaged in a noisy duel, raising accusations against each other although both appeared for petitioners on the same side, demanding an investigation.

This had prompted Justice Chandrachud to intervene, as he asked the lawyers to maintain decorum. “This is turning into worse than a fish market…let us not reduce the level of debate to a fish market,” said the judge.

These comments were widely reported by the media, and it seems the oral observations have not gone down well with a representative group of the fishermen community.

Issuing a press release, the NFF chairperson M Ilano stated: “Then hearts of the fisher community people are pained as he (the judge) has mentioned their activity in a case which has nothing in common.”

The release questioned why the activities at a “fish market” should be painted in a bad light, and added the comment has brought the esteem of the fishermen to a disrepute.

“The fishermen community across the country is bewildered,” mentioned Ilango in his press statement, while demanding the judge take back his observation.

“I demand on behalf of the fishermen communities, all over India, that the Honourable Justice should take back the words in the same forum where it was uttered,” read the statement.
