Bollywood diva Kareena Kapoor Khan is someone who has over the years not only established herself in the Hindi film industry as an actor but also as a style icon.
From sporting crop tops, fur jackets and leather pants in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham to flaunting her size zero figure in Tashan, Kareena has set high fashion and fitness standards in the industry. She inspires many young girls and women to not just look good but also to be in shape and feel confident about themselves and their bodies. In fact, while pregnant women shy away from making public appearances, Kareena chose to walk the ramp for designer Sabyasachi during pregnancy and flaunted her baby bump with style and elegance all through the nine months. But it didn't stop at that.
Post delivering baby boy Taimur, Kareena got back to the fitness grind almost immediately. She shed kilos within months with her hard work and dedication towards fitness. Kareena, who chooses to stay fit by practising yoga, performing workouts and taking lessons in kickboxing also follows a strict and balanced diet plan. And the one person responsible for her balanced diet is celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar.
We spoke to Diwekar, who is not just Kareena's dietitian but also someone who shares a personal bond with the actor, and asked her the reason behind Kareena's remarkable rapid weight loss post-pregnancy.
"It's been a decade of collaboration and the relationship has evolved over years. I have watched Kareena grow from strength to strength as an actor and effortlessly balance her personal life, pregnancy and motherhood included. In fact, she should get an award, for just being her. One of her under valued achievements is the way she has put local, indigenous food back on our plates, minds and conversations. She's an integral part of my work life and I have no idea what my career would have looked like without her solid presence in it," said Diwekar in an exclusive interview to News18.com.
Divulging details about the secret behind Kareena's rapid weight loss post pregnancy, Diwekar said, "The fact that she was fit for 10 years before she got pregnant (is the secret to her rapid weight loss post pregnancy). Every girl must realise that while we look at life in small parts, what really affects us is how we look like in the next two months (whether in our jobs or jeans) but it has more to do with how we have been treating ourselves in the last 20 years." "So, the secret to getting in shape post pregnancy is to know that pregnant is also a good shape to be in. Nice and round on the stomach, toned and strong in your back and legs, and healthy even before pregnancy crossed your mind," Diwekar added.
When asked about the kind of food items she has recommended to Kareena to shed those extra kilos, Diwekar said, "She eats homemade food, banana or soaked almonds in the morning. Takes rice for both lunch and dinner or dal khichri and maintains a disciplined bedtime." "Also, she makes 150 minutes to exercise per week." Diwekar added, "The idea is to not do anything drastic and allow the body to come back to its pre-pregnancy shape with compassion and kindness, a step at a time. It's really about sustainability and that comes from both a scientific and a sensitive approach towards oneself and physiology."
She also revealed the must haves and nots in Kareena's diet that helps her lose weight and also remain fit. She said that while jaggery, ghee, rice, dahi and banana were a must have for the actor, she had recommended that Kareena refrain from having packaged and processed food and also avoid erratic meal timings.
And while it isn't easy for a celebrity nutritionist to be working with a celebrity who is constantly being scrutinised for her looks, Diwekar feels otherwise. "Celebs are the easiest people one could work it, they are kind, appreciative of your efforts and committed to bring about lifestyle changes that will help them get into the shape that they aspire to be in," said Diwekar. "It is in fact challenging for them given the schedules, timings and the constant scrutiny that they are subjected to. So, if there really is a challenge, it's only about planning diets that fit their lives and actually about asking them to take it easy when needed," Diwekar added.
