Kalki 2898 AD Event: Deepika Padukone Faces Flak For Wearing Heels During Pregnancy
An expert weighs his opinion about the dangers of wearing stilettos during pregnancy.

The mom-to-be actress, Deepika Padukone left her fans floored after she finally shared some breathtaking pictures of herself on social media with her baby bump. The actress dropped some monochrome clicks that showcased her obvious radiant glow and effortless style game as she stunned everyone in a black ensemble with a slit in the back and accentuating her figure. While all eyes were on a dazzling smile, stylish attire and the baby bump, you might have noticed her in matching black stilettoes. This brings light to the question of whether women should wear heels during their pregnancy.

Reportedly, the actress is due in three months and will be embracing motherhood in September. In a pre-release event, she was spotted wearing an in-vogue outfit and high heels. But she is not the first actress to wear so. But this does raise questions about safety during pregnancy. Even if you are not pregnant, heels do pose a certain challenge in regular wear. There might be a risk of swollen feet, twisting ankles, sprain and falling. In such a situation, doctors advise moms-to-be to wear comfortable footwear. Wearing heels for a long time can cause pain in the spine, and legs and even in some cases lead to premature labour pain.

Mumbai’s famous gynaecologist, Dr Ganesh Shinde shared, “If you are wearing heels during this (pregnancy) time, then do not wear them for a long time.” He also advised against wearing extremely high heels and instead recommended wearing footwear with soft and cushioned soles. Wearing high heels for a long time can cause the calf muscles to cramp. The expert further added that mums-to-be should avoid wearing heels after the fifth month of pregnancy. As the pregnancy advances, the weight of the mother’s body increases. This can further cause strain on the legs, especially the ankles and the feet.

Experts have often recommended alternatives to pointed heels as well. If one does not like flats but still wants to wear heels, it is better to opt for wedges or platform heels during pregnancy. It helps in the weight distribution. It should be worn only for a short period.
