Lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and quitting smoking significantly impact the outcomes of lung cancer patients, complementing medical treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.
Dr Nithin SG, Consultant, Medical Oncology, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, says, “Quitting smoking is essential for lung cancer patients. Smoking induces systemic inflammation, weakens the immune system, and increases the toxicity of chemotherapy, particularly leading to complications like mucositis and respiratory infections. Moreover, stopping smoking reduces the risk of cancer recurrence and lowers the chances of developing secondary cancers. This demonstrates how smoking cessation directly improves treatment success and long-term survival rates.”
In addition to smoking cessation, a well-balanced diet plays a vital role in boosting immunity and improving a patient’s ability to withstand cancer treatments. “Diets rich in green leafy vegetables, fruits, and micronutrients replenish deficiencies that are common in cancer patients. These foods not only help manage the side effects of therapy but also strengthen the body’s defense mechanisms to better fight the disease,” shares Dr SG.
Exercise is another critical factor, especially for lung cancer patients who undergo surgery or radiotherapy. “Poor cardiopulmonary health can negatively affect surgical outcomes, with obese patients and those suffering from chronic airway diseases facing higher perioperative morbidity and mortality rates. Regular physical activity helps improve cardiopulmonary function, reducing the risks associated with lung cancer surgeries and improving post-operative recovery. This leads to better long-term outcomes and overall survival rates,” believes Dr SG.
Together, these lifestyle modifications—quitting smoking, maintaining a nutritious diet, and engaging in regular exercise—enhance the effectiveness of lung cancer treatments and improve the patient’s quality of life.
