Diljit Dosanjh Opens Up On Sporting Punjabi Attire Globally Amid Amar Singh Chamkila 'Turban' Controversy
Diljit Dosanjh's comment comes weeks after the singer was embroiled in a controversy for not wearing a turban in his movie, Amar Singh Chamkila.

Diljit Dosanjh is widely loved across the world. The singer-actor recently made his debut on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show when he stunned all with his Born To Shine and G.O.A.T performance. For his appearance on the popular show, Diljit sported a white embroidered half-sleeve kurta and a matching Tehmat. He paired the outfit with a matching white turban as he represented Punjabi attire on a global platform.

Days after, Diljit has now opened up about why he chose to wear Punjabi attire for international shows. Recently, the ‘Lover’ singer was talking to Sucharita Tyagi on her YouTube channel, when he mentioned that the attire is more important than the songs. “It is very important for me to sing Punjabi songs during my international performances. Wearing Punjabi dress is also important,” he said as quoted by Pinkvilla.

Interestingly, Diljit Dosanjh’s comment comes weeks after the singer was embroiled in a controversy for not wearing a turban in his movie, Amar Singh Chamkila. While a large number of fans loved Diljit’s performance, some were worried about his appearance in the film. They thought he had cut his hair short to look like Chamkila.

However, the director of the film, Imtiaz Ali later clarified that it wasn’t true. He revealed that Diljit wore a wig for his movie and told Radio Nasha, “I would not want to share his personal details, but yes, Diljit has worn a wig. That wig is like his turban only. He has not sacrificed a single hair for this film. Because he played a character and he knew how Chamkila looked, so he managed to look the part with a wig. He donned the look very sincerely and with very good intentions.”

Imtiaz Ali’s film is based on the real-life pop star duo Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur, whose songs became massive hits in the 80s. However, they were shot dead in 1988. In the film, Diljit Dosanjh played the role of Punjabi singer whereas Parineeti Chopra essayed the role of his wife. It is currently streaming on Netflix.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Diljit Dosanjh will soon be seen in Jatt and Juliet 3. The film, which also stars Neeru Bajwa in the lead, will hit theatres on June 28, 2024.
