Aishwarya Rajinikanth’s directorial sports film Lal Salaam released amidst much expectations and fanfare but underperformed at the box office. Made on a budget of Rs 90 crore, the film ended its theatrical run with a lifetime collection of just Rs 17 crore, making it a huge commercial failure. Even the extended cameo appearance of Rajinikanth as Moideen Bhai could not save the fate of Lal Salaam. Although the social message of communal harmony against the backdrop of a cricket tournament was praised by critics, overall Lal Salaam received mostly negative reviews. Aishwarya Rajinikanth has said that the main reason that the film failed was because the hard disk that contained integral scenes that were shot was misplaced somehow, thus making the production team lose the footage. Usually, new films released in theatres are released on OTT platforms after a gap of 8 weeks. Now, 7 months have passed since Lal Salaam released and the film is not released on any OTT platform yet. Although not stated by sources, fans believe that the loss of the hard disk is the reason the film is not yet streaming on OTT.
In a recent interview, Aishwarya said that the missing hard disk has been found and hence the lost footage has been recovered. She has said that the footage will be added to the OTT release of the film and hence fans will be able to watch the director’s cut of the film on OTT. Aishwarya has assured that the OTT version will be significantly different from the theatrical release. Many films that have failed at the box office have enjoyed a good response after their OTT release, It remains to be seen if Lal Salaam gets to be one of those films. Reportedly, Netflix has bought the streaming rights of the film.
