Pa Ranjith’s Thangalaan is one of the most eagerly awaited Tamil films of the year. We have already had glimpses into Vikram’s dramatic transformation for the role of tribal village chieftain during British rule. Now, the makers have revealed the look of actress Malavika Mohanan from the movie. On Sunday, Malavika Mohanan celebrated her 31st birthday, and on the occasion, the makers of Thangalaan unveiled a character poster for her.

Malavika will portray Aarathi, a revered local deity in the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), where the film’s story unfolds. Her character is depicted with a traditional piece of cloth wrapped around her waist, signifying her cultural roots and connection to the land. Adorned with chunky tribal jewellery, Malavika’s appearance is both striking and authentic. Holding a large wooden stick, she embodies strength and resilience, her fierce gaze directed to one side.

The makers shared the poster with the caption, “Anyone who dared to question her existence, knew it through her wrath”, which ensures that we will see much of the deity Aarathi’s fury unfold in the form of Malavika’s impeccable performance. Malavika also has some action and stunt sequences in the film, something that she has not done before.

Speaking in an interview about working on stunts alongside Vikram, she said, “I felt very intimidated when I met Chiyaan Vikram for the first time. I was also nervous about potentially embarrassing myself while performing stunt sequences with him, especially since it was my first time doing action scenes. However, he made me feel incredibly at ease. As a co-actor, he was so kind and generous. I can’t imagine having gone through this journey without his support. He truly is an exceptional person. I have nothing but love and respect for him.”

Thangalaan is slated for release on August 15, coinciding with the Independence Day holiday.
