Mallika Sherawat Says Her Mother Went Into Depression When She Was Born, Reflects On Her Difficult Childhood

Mallika Sherawat has marked her comeback in Bollywood with Vicky Aur Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video. As the actor receives love for her comeback, she reflects on her childhood. In a latest interview, Sherawat spoke about how she was discriminated against in Haryana while she was growing up and how her family was disappointed when she was born.

In a conversation with Hauterrfly, Mallika Sherawat recalled how difficult her life was when she was growing up because she had no support. She talked about the rampant patriarchy that was around her back in her hometown. The actor said, “I didn’t have anybody’s support. Neither my mother nor my father supported me. My family did not support me.”

The actor also revealed that her parents discriminated between her and her brother only because of their gender. She added how her parents saw a girl child as a ‘liability.’ Sherawat continued, “As a child, I didn’t understand, but now I do. They used to say, ‘Woh ladka hai usko videsh bhejo, usko padhao, usmein paisa invest karo. Parivaar ki saari sampatti ladke ko jaayegi, pote ko jaayegi. Ladkiyon ka kya hai?  They will get married, they are a liability, ek bojh hai.’”

In the same conversation, Sherawat mentioned how her family did not give her freedom and how disappointed they were when she was born. She said, “My parents gave me everything… a good education, but not an open mindset or good thoughts. They didn’t give me the freedom. They didn’t nurture me, never tried to understand me…When I was born mere pariwaar mein maatam chhaa gaya tha. My mother, I am sure, went into depression, poor thing.”

Sherawat was last seen in RK/RKay where she shared the screen with Rajat Kapoor. Her latest film, Vicky Aur Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, was released in theatres today – October 11. She shares the screen with Rajkummar Rao, Triptii Dimri, and Vijay Raaz.
