Controversy struck the makers of Manjummel Boys after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched an investigation against them for alleged money laundering. Reportedly, the ED questioned Shawn Antony, one of the producers of the film. After failing to respond, the ED is set to send a second notice to the Malayalam filmmakers. Actor and producer Soubin Shahir will also be questioned.
Malayalam film, Manjummel Boys created a huge storm at the box office with its release and offered an enthralling cinematic experience to the audience this year. It also put Malayalam films back on the map for churning out quality content. The film amassed Rs 200 crore in the global market, an unprecedented success for the Malayalam film industry and makers as well. It also emerged to be one of the highest-grossers in the Malayalam cinema.
Now, after seeing a huge success, the makers have landed in a controversy. As per reports, a money laundering case has been filed against the makers after Manjummel Boys’ investor Siraj Valiyathara Hameed accused them of money laundering and cheating. The ED first sent the notice to the production company, Parava Films’ founders, Soubin Shahir, Babu Shahir and Shawn Antony. As per the complaint, the film’s producers had promised him 40 per cent of the film’s total profit share in return for his investment in the film. While the film has reportedly made around Rs 200 crore at the box office, the makers backed out of their promise which led to the investor filing a cheating case against the makers.
Talking of the film, Manjummel Boys is a survival thriller directed by Chidambaram. It stars Sreenath Bhasi and Soubin Shahir in the lead roles. The film is based on the real-life event that took place in Kodaikanal’s Gunaa Caves in the 90s. The story narrates the story of a group of friends from Kochi’s Manjummel who travel to the Devil’s Kitchen, aka, Gunaa Caves for a getaway vacation. But when one of them falls into a ditch, the friends promptly engage in a rescue operation. The film also starred Balu Varghese, Ganapathi S. Poduval, Lal Jr., Deepak Parambol, Abhiram Radhakrishnan and others. It hit the screens on February 22.
