'Men Must Understand What Women Go Through': Pratibha Ranta On Menstruation
The actress stressed that it is very essential for boys and men to have open discussions about menstruation.

Actress Pratibha Ranta received positive responses to her powerful performances in Laapata Ladies and Heeramandi. She became an overnight sensation among fans with her acting skills and strong performances. The actress recently spoke about women’s safety, issues faced by women and menstruation in an interview.

During this, Ranta emphasised the necessity of men understanding what women experience throughout those days. She further shared a personal experience where one of her male friends expressed curiosity about what a sanitary pad looks like.

“Television has given me recognition in my hometown. Everyone keeps saying my show is on TV. It’s quite challenging for someone from Himachal to establish themselves in Mumbai. I come from a family where women have the freedom to make their own decisions. My grandmother was a teacher when Indian women weren’t working. She used to teach students to play during that era. My grandmother taught Hindi and had a passion for dance. My mother is a housewife and we have an apple business at home,” she said.

The actress also shared that her school helped her understand the situation better. “It was an all-girls school. My first boyfriend was from a boys’ school and I was his first female friend. I was coming home from dance class when I ran into him. I was a bit bothered because I was on my period and I told him, ‘Listen! I’m on my period today. I can’t walk much.’ As soon as he heard about periods, he panicked a little. It was the first time someone had openly talked to him about it. He started biologically explaining how long it lasts and how it happens, speaking in textbook language. I laughed a bit and said, ‘Yeah, I know,” she added.

Pratibha further said in the same interview that their relationship became more comfortable after this. The actress revealed that her boyfriend told her he had never seen a sanitary pad before and asked if she could show him one. “I told him I had an extra one and would show him. I took it out of my bag and handed it to him, saying there was no problem with it,” she said.

The actress stressed that it is very essential for boys and men to have open discussions about menstruation. She further stated that experience gives knowledge a proper form and enhances understanding. “Some things are better understood through experience,” she added.

Pratibha Ranta hails from Tikkar in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh. The 24-year-old actress made her acting debut in the TV show Qurbaan Hua (2020-2021) but became popular with Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi in 2024.
