News18 Showsha Reel Awards are back with a bang. The show promises to be bigger, better, and grander than ever before. The awards will celebrate the growing bond between the world of over-the-top (OTT) platforms and the Hindi film industry, as we honour all achievers and stars on March 9 in Mumbai. The awards will bring together the greatest talents of Bollywood and the OTT platforms under one roof.
This year, some of the finest OTT series are nominated for ‘Best Web Series’. Let’s take a look at the nominees for the category:
Farzi: Director duo Raj and DK’s Farzi released on Prime Video in February 2023 and received overwhelming reviews from all. Starring Shahid Kapoor, Raashii Khanna, Vijay Sethupathi, and Kay Kay Menon in the lead, the show revolves around Sunny – an artist who decides to make counterfeit money after failing to keep his grandfather’s printing press working.
Trial By Fire: Released in January 2023 on Netflix, Trial By Fire is based on the 1997 Uphaar Cinema fire, which claimed 59 lives and injured over 100 people. The show follows the story of Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy, played by Rajshri Deshpande and Abhay Deol respectively after they lose their children in the tragedy. Directed by Prashant Nair and produced by Endemol Shine India and House of Talkies, Trial By Fire also stars Anupam Kher, Ratna Pathak Shah, Shilpa Shukla, Ashish Vidyarthi, and Rajesh Tailang in key roles.
Jubilee: When Jubilee was released on Prime Video in April 2023, it offered something new to the audience and impressed all. It is a period drama set around the India-Pakistan partition and tells the story of the Indian film industry from 1940 to 1955. It stars Prosenjit Chatterjee, Aparshakti Khurana, Sidhant Gupta, Aditi Rao Hydari, Wamiqa Gabbi, Ram Kapoor, and Nandish Singh Sandhu in the lead roles. Jubilee is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and produced by Andolan Films, Phantom Studios, and Reliance Entertainment.
Kohrra: This Netflix show stars Suvinder Vicky and Barun Sobti in the lead. While one may think that it is just a crime thriller, Randeep Jha proved everyone wrong with his directorial. The show offers its audience more than just two cops trying to crack two cases that are profoundly intertwined with one another. It presents how its characters are fighting the system, and their inner demons and are caught in unconventional and illicit relationships.
Kaala Paani: Especially after the coronavirus induced lockdown, the Netflix show Kaala Pani will shock and scare you. It is a survival drama that resonance with the Covid-19 pandemic and keeps you jaw-dropped. Kaala Paani tells the compelling tale of an unknown disease that is slowly engulfing the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It shows how a man loses his entire family to the deadly disease and ends up risking everyone else too when he learns that even his daughter is infected. The show leaves you with mixed emotions of love, despair, and sorrow.
Dahaad: Sonakshi Sinha turns ‘Dabangg’ in this Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti directorial, literally. She plays the role of a cop in this crime drama which revolves around police personnel trying to nab a serial killer. What keeps you engrossed in the show is the way it presents how the police department leaves no stone unturned to put the killer behind bars. Besides Sonakshi Sinha, it also stars Vijay Verma, Gulshan Devaiah, and Sohum Shah in key roles.
