Actor Vijay Sethupathi starrer Maharaja is currently going strong at the box office with reports of its collection inching towards Rs 50 crore. Critics have lauded Sethupathi’s acting prowess but recent reports have indicated that he was not the first choice for Maharaja’s role.

As per reports, the director and writer Nithilan Swaminathan, and other prominent technicians wanted to rope in Vijay Antony to play the lead role. However, the director had to go ahead with Sethupathi’s name, because of his deal with the production company Passion Studios. These reports have been confirmed in an interview that surfaced on Twitter.

Maharaja stars an ensemble cast of Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Abhirami, Natarajan Subramaniam and others. Billed as a crime drama, Maharaja was hailed for its innovative screenplay and adorable moments between the father and daughter’s characters.

Maharaja marks the milestone of 50 films in Vijay Sethupathi’s acting career. In an exclusive interview with ETV Bharat, the 46-year-old actor described what sets his 50th film apart from other projects. According to the Merry Christmas actor, “This movie is not like the usual commercial movies or art film genres,” he mentioned. “It’s a unique story that explores the lengths to which a man will go to protect his family. The director, Nithilan Swaminathan, has done an outstanding job of crafting each character, and Ajaneesh Loknath’s music is a major highlight.”

Vijay Sethupathi has now become one of the most sought-after actors in the film industry. However, there was a time when he was clueless about his career trajectory. In a recent interview with Chai Bisket Shorts, the Jawan actor said that he didn’t have any idea about his college syllabus. According to him, he was never good at studies, or sports, and didn’t even have girlfriends. Sethupathi said that his only goal was to come out of poverty.
