Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies has been announced as India’s official entry for Oscars 2025. The film will compete for a spot in the nomination list of Best Foreign Films. While fans of the film are celebrating, it is interesting to note that Laapataa Ladies was nominated with 28 other films. These include Ranbir Kapoor-Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal and Prabhas-Amitabh Bachchan starrer Kalki 2898 AD. It has also been revealed that Chhota Bheem and the Curse of Damyaan was in the running.
The list submitted to members of The Film Federation of India for the Oscars 2025 consideration revealed that a total of 29 movies were in the running. The list featured 13 South Indian films were being considered. These include Hanuman, Kalki 2898 AD, National Award winning film Aattam, Kottukkaali Maharaja, Ullozhukku, Aadujeevitham, Jigarthanda Double X, Thangalaan, Jama, Vaazhai, Mangalavaaram and All We Imagine as Light, which won Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival 2024.
The Hindi films included Chhota Bheem and the Curse of Damyaan, Kill, Good Luck, Animal, Srikanth, Chandu Champion, Joram, Maidaan, Sam Bahadur, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, and Article 370. Check out the complete list below:
Meanwhile, directed Kiran Rao had manifested an Oscar run for Laapataa Ladies. Speaking with PTI last week, Kiran Rao said, “My dream would be fulfilled if it was, if it would go (to Oscars). But it’s a process, and I’m hoping it’ll (Laapataa Ladies) be considered. I’m sure the best film will go, whoever they choose in the scheme of things.”
The film stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan. Laapataa Ladies takes viewers back to rural India in 2001. Its narrative revolves around two brides who get exchanged during a train journey. The journey filled with twists and turns begins as their husbands start searching for the real bride.
Made under the banners of Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions, Laapataa Ladies marked the directorial comeback of Kiran Rao after Dhobi Ghat. Before its theatrical release, the film was screened at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023. It received a standing ovation from the audience present at the festival.
