Villupuram Chinnaiya Manrayar Ganesamoorthy, aka, Sivaji Ganesan was one of the greatest actors of his time and was revered in the cinema industry. He ruled the Tamil screens during the 50s and 60s and still serves as an inspiration to many. He showcased his versatile acting through his various roles on the celluloid. He also earned the nickname Nadigar Thilagam, which translates to the “pride of actors”. Recently, a photo of his mother and wife have surfaced on the internet which has gained a lot of traction.
The viral photo shows Sivaji Ganesan seated next to his mother Rajamani Ammal draped in a saree, while his wife, Kamala stood right behind the mother-son duo posing for the camera.
In his five-decade-long career, he worked in about 288 movies which include Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi industries and in 250 films, he was the lead character. His stellar acting earned him the Best Actor award in the International Film Festival, Afro-Asian Film Festival which was held in Cairo, Egypt in 1960. He was also the recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honour of films in India. Apart from this, for his work, he received a National Film Award, four Filmfare Awards South and three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards.
The actor marked his debut with Parasakthi and later starred in Panam, Paradesi, Poongodhai, Kalyanam Panniyum Brahmachari, Tenali Raman, Bommai Kalyanam, Galatta Kalyanam and many more. He earned the monicker Sivaji after he played the role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the play titled Shivaji Kanda Hindu Rajyam which was written by C.N Annadurai. The yesteryear actor has also worked in the Hindi film industry in movies like Manohara, Dharti and School Master.
On July 21, 2001, Sivaji Ganesan passed away. Reportedly, he suffered from respiratory problems and was admitted to the Apollo Hospital in Chennai on July 1, 2001. He also suffered from a heart ailment for many years. He was given a state funeral which was attended by thousands of viewers, politicians and famous personalities from the South film fraternity..
