Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal finally opened up about why they chose to keep their relationship under wraps before tying the knot this year. After dating for over seven years, Sonakshi and Zaheer had a registered marriage on June 23 at her home in Mumbai, followed by a grand reception attended by stars like Salman Khan, Huma Qureshi, Rekha and Kajol.
During a candid session with Tavishi Paitandy at CNN-News18 Mumbai Townhall 2024, the couple revealed their reasons for staying private, shedding light on their journey as a couple.
When asked why they didn’t openly discuss their relationship or make public appearances as a couple, Sonakshi had a heartfelt response. “Nazar,” she quipped, hinting at the common belief of warding off negative energy. She went on to explain that being in the limelight as an actress often means that attention can divert from one’s work and legacy. “I feel it’s always better to keep private things private,” Sonakshi said. “You’re already so much in the limelight; everybody knows everything about you. Something that is so dear to you should be kept for yourself.”
Sonakshi emphasised that there was no grand strategy behind their decision. It was an organic progression for them. “We met, we fell in love, we started going out. For me, I realised very early on that this is permanent,” she shared, admitting that Zaheer took his time to reach the same conclusion. However, once he did, the two of them became more comfortable sharing their relationship publicly.
Zaheer, sharing his side of the story, admitted that he initially thought his feelings were just the result of something new and exciting. “A guy being a guy, I thought it was just because it was new,” he joked. But as time passed, his feelings for Sonakshi only deepened. “I knew from day one that she was the one, but I just accepted it much later.”
Their decision to keep their love story out of the public eye was a conscious one, and the couple agrees it allowed them to treasure those special moments without outside pressures.
